Anybody from Rotuma knows what a Fara is.
But for those of you who are of the
misfortune of being anything other than Rotuman,
let me briefly explain. The entire month of
December is celebrated every year on the island
if Rotuma with young people going around from
house to house, from late night to sunrise,
guitar strumming, singing and dancing. We have a
similar thing here in the United States. It's
called Christmas Caroling. But while we're
singing about Frosty the Snowman and donned in
earmuffs and wrapped in scarfs, meanwhile in
Rotuma it's a hundred degrees plus down there by
the equator, and they're going around barefooted
and wrapped in sarongs. And the music they play
is for dancing. So whether you come from the
island of Rhode, or the landlocked island of
North Dakota where the closest thing to sandy
beaches is eight months of snow, don't despair.
When you hear this CD with ten great Fara songs
by Jon Kafoa and crew, no matter how deep the
snow, and no matter how far from the coral reef,
you'll want to kick your shoes off and dance.

musical tribute performed in Suva during the
150th jubilee celebration of the Roman Catholic
Church on Rotuma in 1996. This is a rare find
and there isn't a Walmart, ebay music store or

to order or even backorder this masterpiece.
There are 21 cuts on this CD to include Tautoga
(hafa), Tiap, Hiko, Calling the Pigs (pre-nocturn
