Authentic
Red Coral Necklace (15"). The
age old practice of breaking coral from island
reefs to string into necklaces is now banned in
much of the South Pacific. On Akata's last trip
to Fiji, she found an open market vendor who had
some of these rare necklaces (pre-ban
harvested). She purchased every last one he had
- but there weren't many. These 15" branch
coral necklaces with high quality clasps are
fully organic and have no potential for harmful
effects on the ozone layer. However, cleverly
crafted plastic imitations which are now
flooding the market as a result of the coral
products ban are fossil fuel based, smoke
belching factory made and therefore user
unfriendly for our fragile ozone. This is a
limited supply offer for only...

Puka
Shell Necklace (17").
Chose from a
colorful array of these internationally popular
broken shell necklaces to include lagoon blue,
sunset coral, hot pink or sandy-beach-in-Fiji
white. These 17" medal barrel clasp
necklaces are made in Fiji by beautiful, nimble
fingered, golden skinned islanders who bath in
100% virgin coconut soap (incidentally, which we
also carry in four fragrances). After assembly,
necklace claps are whiplash tested by barefooted
Polynesian dancers. Caution that you don't get a
whiplash when you do a double take at the price
sticker on these jewels selling for only

Puka
Shell Ensemble
Available in
lagoon blue, sunset coral, hot pink or
sandy-beach-in-Fiji white. A 17" necklace
and
one-size-fits-all bracelet complete this
timelessly fashionable combo. Unlike diamonds
which are
largely mined by slave labor in Africa for the
filthy rich DeBeer family; abundantly available
puka shells are collected and assembled by happy
islanders whose riches are countless, because
they're riches are in spirit, and they don't
respond well to being told what to do. And also
unlike diamonds, puka shells will go with just
about anything (Image wearing a diamond ensemble
while skinny dipping at Waikiki). Like they say
in Suva, Fiji, puka shells are a girls best
friend. (separately $3.25 for necklace and $1.75
for bracelet- see above). Ensemble is...

About Puka Shells:
The puka shell comes from a cone shell that at first has
a mollusk inside of it. Eventually, the
mollusk will either be eaten or die of natural causes.
When this happens, the cone shell is tossed
around by strong ocean waves. After years of pounding,
the cone will eventually break apart, and
the top of the cone will be the only part left.
The top of the cone is where the snail sleeps or
hibernates, and therefore is the strongest part of the
cone. However, because of the way the mollusk
(shell) grows (in a circular manner), the midpoint on
the top of the cone is slightly more vulnerable. The
center of the top of the cone will wear away before the
rest of the top of the cone, thereby creating a hole in
the center, which creates what we know as a puka
shell.

Woven
Bracelets with Shells
7” Woven
Bracelets with Natural Cowry Shells. Includes a
loop at the end for an adjustable fit.
These strands are hand woven in the same manner
the islanders have been doing for thousands of
years. If you're one if those rare individuals
who wear jewelry for its regenerative as well as
cosmetic qualities, it might be interesting for
you to note that in an attempt to prevent
sterility, the ancient women of Pompeii wore
cowry shells. There are even discoveries that
cowry shells were worn by Cro-Magnon women, as
indicated by ornaments found in their caves.
Archeological excavations of Saxon graves in
Germany, as well as pit dwellers of prehistoric
England and pre-dynastic Egypt have revealed the
use of the shells. Prehistoric cemeteries in the
northern slopes of the Caucasus mountains near
the Caspian Sea have revealed large numbers of
shells. Whether these early ancestors of ours
wore the cowry shell as something simply to go
along with their leapard skin wrap on Saturday
night, or whether they too believed in some
propegation of the species potential, is purely
a matter of speculation. No telling what you're
going to end up with for just..

About Seashells:
There was a time when seashells were as good as
gold. Seashells were not only used as money
throughout the South Pacific and other parts of the
world, but as ornaments and charms too. It makes perfect
sense that the first decorative beads were made of
shells. As shells do not decompose
over time, it is not at all surprising that the oldest
known bead is a shell bead that dates back to 38,000BC.
That particular shell bead was fossilized. Some shell
beads come to us via fruits, such as the coconut.
However, the vast majority of shell beads come from
aquatic animals. They start their lives as the coverings
for clams, conches, whelks, etc.
Shell beads come from the four corners of the earth.
They sprung up simultaneously in many
different isolated cultures pointing to humankind's
innate desire to use nature for their own
edification. The list of their functions seems endless.
In addition to money and ornamental use, shells
have as well been used to seal contracts, as a bride
gift or dowry, as a status symbol, as a mark of
rank, to call tribal meetings and to elect tribal chiefs
no hanging chads to blame! Different cultures
have attached symbolic meanings to shell beads.

Hematite
Dolphin Pendant (17")
The dolphin
itself is only an inch long, but if you're a
small person it looks proportionately larger
(the opposite of a very large person going to an
all-you-can-eat buffet). Meanwhile, there's
considerable speculation that the dolphin will
inherit the Earth one day. This could be your
opporunity to make a public showing of your
alliance before all hell breaks loose. The price
is small compared to that.

Sand Dollar?
The sand dollar (phylum Echinodermata, class Echinoidea)
is related to the starfish and sea urchin. It lives
slightly buried in the sand in shallow coastal waters
but will wash up on the beach when it dies, momentarilty
exposed for the eagle-eyed collector. Where to Look:
Take a small container since they break easily until
they are preserved. Start your search at low tide - the
lower the tide, the better chances you have of finding
perfect sand dollars. Search after a storm. Be sure to
look around in the debris at the high-tide area. Watch
at the edge of the water as it recedes. The sand will
wash away from the buried shells. You will need to be
quick to get the sand dollar before the next wave washes
it away or buries it. Collect only dead sand dollars.
They will be about 1 to 4 inches in diameter and look
like a large, white coin. Live sand dollars are brown
and fuzzy - sort of like refrigerator leftovers. Watch
for the very small dollars to make beautiful earrings.
Next, soak your sand dollar in fresh water. Change the
water frequently, as it will turn brown and start to
smell. Continue until the water stays clear. Mix a
solution of 2/3 fresh water and 1/3 bleach and let the
sand dollars soak for about 10 to 15 minutes. If you
live in Saskatuwan, Missouri or say Wyoming, I would
advise simply buy these in their fully prepared and
assembled state from Grass Shack Boutique. $2.25 sounds
better all the time, doesn't it?

Plastic
Fish Ornament
on a 26" synthetic
tie cord
These are
authentic, realistic, synthetic imitations of
the real thing. In addition to that, they're an
exact, approximate, far-fetched likeness to the
famous Hukilau fish (uma uma). If you wear this
out to fish dinner, because of the underwater
eco-system fashion statement you're projecting,
you will not have to tip the waitpersonb (at
your own risk). Young ladies especially love
these colorful little fish pendants because of
their unthreatening facial appearances.

About Abalone:
In addition to it's beautiful shell, Abalone is one
of the most prized sea delicacies worldwide. Farming of
abalone began in the late 1950's and early 1960's in
Japan and China. A very rapid development of abalone
cultivation has taken place in the 1990s and it is now
widespread in many countries including USA, Mexico,
South Africa, Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Ireland,
Iceland and others. The largest cultured abalone
producer in the world is China with over 300 farms and a
total production of approximately 3500 tons. Worldwide,
there are over 15 species of abalone which are farmed
and commercially important. Species can live in water
temperatures ranging from 2C to30C. Abalone are cultured
worldwide using many different culture methods. The
